Behentrimonium chloride comparison in hair and fabric care formulations

OSMFACT® MY2231I and OSMFACT® MY2231E (hereinafter referred to as MY2231I and MY2231E), the core active ingredient is Behentrimonium chloride (CAS number 17301 53 0), and the active ingredient content is stable at 78% -83% (typical value 80%). It can play a regulating and anti-static role in hair care, fabric care and other fields. However, the solvents used in the two are different. MY2231I contains isopropanol, while MY2231E contains ethanol, which makes them significantly different in practical use. To accurately distinguish the characteristics of the two, it is necessary to analyze them from multiple dimensions such as the synergistic effect of core components, physical and chemical properties, and processing adaptability.
 
From the perspective of synergistic effects of core components, the long-chain C22 hydrophobic group of trimethylammonium chloride requires a cosolvent to form a stable system with the aqueous phase. Therefore, the choice of cosolvent directly affects the dissolution efficiency and formulation compatibility of the active substance. MY2231I uses isopropanol as a co solvent, and its hydroxyl group can form strong hydrogen bonds with water molecules, quickly dispersing the active substance into small micelles. Even at low temperatures, the dissolution rate is faster than conventional surfactants, and when combined with non-ionic surfactants such as Coco glucoside, the system is not easily stratified due to electrolyte action. MY2231E uses ethanol as a co solvent, which has stronger volatility and can quickly evaporate during the formula drying process, reducing product residue. However, ethanol has weaker solubility stability for active substances and is prone to active substance precipitation in high concentration formulas.
 
In terms of physical and chemical properties, although both have the basic advantages of cationic surfactants, there are significant differences in key indicators. MY2231I is a white granular substance with an amine value of ≤ 2mgKOH/g at 25 ℃. It has a low content of free amines and is not easily reacted with acidic components in the formula to generate irritating substances. The solid content is between 80% and 95%, and the unit addition can provide more active ingredients. The pH value is stable at 6-8. In formulas containing acidic active substances such as vitamin C derivatives, the pH fluctuation amplitude is ≤ 0.3, which can effectively protect the stability of the active substances. MY2231E is a white to light yellow particle with a melting point of 75-90 ℃, slightly higher than MY2231I. During high-temperature processing, the temperature must be controlled to prevent degradation, and the pH value should be between 6.0-8.0. Because ethanol has a weak buffering ability for hydrogen ions, in high salt formulations, the pH value can easily drop below 5.5, requiring additional pH adjusters. In addition, ethanol is prone to moisture absorption, and if the humidity is greater than 60% during storage, the particles are prone to clumping, affecting subsequent dissolution.
 
In terms of processing adaptability, the difference between the two is directly related to production efficiency and process selection. Due to the solubilizing properties of isopropanol, MY2231I does not require high-temperature pretreatment and can be dissolved by stirring in warm water. After dissolution, the system has fewer bubbles, which can reduce heating energy consumption. It is particularly suitable for hair conditioner production lines of small and medium-sized enterprises. Its electrolyte resistance is also outstanding. In formulas containing 2% sodium hyaluronate, it can still maintain the uniformity of the system without layering or precipitation. MY2231E needs to utilize the volatility of ethanol and adapt to rapid film formation processes, which can help products form uniform films faster. However, during processing, attention should be paid to controlling the volatilization rate to avoid defects in the film layer caused by rapid evaporation of ethanol.When the temperature is above 50 ℃, an increase in ethanol volatilization can easily cause a decrease in system viscosity. Amino silicone emulsion can be used to adjust the viscosity and increase the complexity of the formula.
 
In terms of application scenarios, both have their own advantages. MY2231I, with its high solid content and low amine value, can be added to concentrated hair conditioners by adding 1.0-3.0%, which can combine cationic charges with negative charges on the hair surface to form a protective film and improve dry hair combing properties. In fabric softeners, isopropanol system can penetrate into the interior of high-end fabric fibers such as wool and silk, reducing the stiffness after washing, and has good compatibility with fabric fibers, without affecting the breathability of the fabric. MY2231E is more suitable for hair dyeing and perming products. Adding 0.1-4.0% ethanol to hair dye can shorten the drying time of hair after dyeing and enhance pigment adhesion. In the wash free hair care spray, the rapid volatilization of ethanol can avoid the sticky residue of the product, but because ethanol is harmful to aquatic organisms, it is not suitable for use in maternal and infant fabric care products.
 
In terms of safety, both are harmful to aquatic organisms and should be avoided from leaking into the environment during use. Waste materials should be disposed of by hazardous waste treatment companies, and chemical resistant gloves (such as 0.4mm nitrile rubber) that comply with EN374 standards and frame goggles that comply with EN166 standards should be worn during operation to prevent skin and eye irritation. But the compliance requirements for transportation are different: MY2231I, it is sufficient to prevent exposure to sunlight and rain during transportation. Due to the high ethanol content, MY2231E needs to be transported away from open flames and heat sources. It is prohibited to transport it together with strong oxidants in the same vehicle. The transportation cost is slightly higher than MY2231I.
 
From a cost perspective, MY2231I has a lower unit active ingredient cost compared to MY2231E due to its low usage of isopropanol and mature production process. The packaging specification is 20kg/bag, which is suitable for batch use and reduces material waste. MY2231E has a high ethanol content and is packaged at 25kg/box, making it suitable for automated feeding in large factories.
 
In terms of innovation direction, MY2231I can expand its application boundaries through compound modification, such as combining with plant extracts to develop mild and conditioning dual effect hair care materials. MY2231E can optimize ethanol content, balance volatility and stability, and explore the combination with biodegradable co solvents to reduce environmental hazards. In terms of environmental compatibility, both have a certain degree of recyclability, but the biodegradation rate of MY2231I's isopropanol system is higher than that of MY2231E's ethanol system. In the future, the degradation performance can be improved by improving the production process, which is in line with the trend of green beauty.
