How This Acrylic Copolymer Thickener Is Made
This product is made of a copolymer of acrylamide and ammonium acrylate dispersed in cosmetic grade mineral oil with Laureth-7 as a nonionic surfactant. The acrylamide copolymer is synthesized via aqueous free radical polymerization to form a water-swellable polymer network. Mineral oil acts as a stable non-volatile carrier, while Laureth-7 enhances emulsification. The final product is a milky white liquid with 60% active ingredient content, designed to achieve high thickening efficiency in aqueous systems and remain stable over a wide pH range.
 
Role in Cosmetics
This emulsion base functions as an aqueous thickener, Emulsifier, and rheology modifier. Only 0.5%–2% is added to form a smooth, stable cream and lotion base that ensures a uniform product texture. The acrylamide copolymer is responsible for regulating viscosity and maintaining formula stability, while the mineral oil provides occlusive moisturizing by forming a barrier on the skin surface. Laureth-7 helps disperse the oil phase and pigments, making the emulsion smoother and more uniform in texture. It is compatible with a variety of cosmetic raw materials, including active ingredients, fragrances and Emollients.
 
Keep benefit
The system has high thickening efficiency and can form a paste with uniform texture and pleasant appearance; it can still keep the emulsion stable under alkaline conditions and is not easily ineffective due to water or rubbing. Mineral oil provides skin conditioning effects and no odor, while Laureth-7 makes skin care and makeup bases disperse more smoothly and have better texture. The two work synergistically to reduce phase separation problems and extend the shelf life of products.
